During an evening woodworking class, Anton made a small shelf for his work papers. He measured two pieces of wood, marked them with a pencil and cut them with the teacher's help. He was pleased because both pieces looked exactly the same.
When he put the shelf together, however, it leaned to the left. Anton thought the table was uneven. He moved his work to another table, but the problem stayed. His class partner, Liv, asked to see the measurements in his notebook.
One piece needed to be longer than the other because it went under the side of the shelf. Anton had copied one number twice. There was not enough wood left to make another long piece, and the class was nearly over.
The teacher suggested a smaller shelf. Anton changed his plan and carefully shortened the correct pieces. His finished shelf could hold only three folders, but it stood straight. He decided to use it for the three projects he worked on most often.
