The public footpath to West Wood crossed a field on a small farm. At the entrance, a sign asked walkers to keep to the marked path and close the gate. Holly read it aloud to her cousin before they went through.
The gate was heavy, and its catch did not close on the first try. Holly's cousin started walking away, but she called him back. Together, they lifted the gate slightly and pushed it until they heard the catch click into place.
Across the field, some sheep were eating near a fence. The cousins stayed on the path and gave them plenty of space. Near the next gate, they met a farmer carrying a bucket. He thanked them for checking the first gate carefully.
In West Wood, the path was covered with yellow leaves. They walked to a small stream and rested beside it before returning. At each gate on the way back, they checked the sign and left the gate as requested. Their walk ended without any sheep following them.
