During a local beach walk, Nadia found a smooth stone with a white line around it. She wanted to take it home for her windowsill. Then she noticed a sign asking visitors to leave stones and shells on this small beach.
Her first thought was that one stone could not matter very much. However, several other walkers were also looking closely at the ground. Nadia put the stone back where she had found it and took a photograph with her phone instead.
She began a different kind of collection. There was a round pink stone, a broken shell with orange edges and a long piece of dark seaweed. She photographed each one without moving it. Her walk became slower as she looked for interesting shapes.
At home, she chose four pictures and arranged them on one page. She printed the page and placed it above her desk. The beach collection took up no space on her windowsill. When her friend asked where the stones were, Nadia could honestly answer that they were still beside the sea.
