At the local geology museum, Marco kept his hands behind his back. Most objects were inside glass cases, and signs asked visitors not to touch them. He enjoyed looking at the stones, but he wanted to know how heavy they were.
In the last room, he saw a large grey stone on a low table. A sign above it said, 'Please touch.' Marco read the words twice. He looked around for a member of staff because he thought the sign might be a joke.
A museum helper smiled and invited him to put one hand on the stone. It felt cool and rough. Beside it were smaller samples that visitors could lift. Marco carefully compared two samples of almost the same size. One was much heavier.
Before leaving, he washed his hands at the nearby sink. On his visitor card, he wrote that the touching table was his favourite part. Looking through glass was interesting, but holding the samples helped him understand why people used different stones for different jobs.
