A beginner navigation class met on the open land near the sports centre. The teacher gave each pair a map and a compass. Ruth had used phone maps before, but she had never held a compass during a walk outside.
Her partner, Omar, read the first instruction: walk north towards a wooden post. Ruth looked at the compass and pointed to the left. Omar pointed straight ahead. They were both sure for a moment, then decided to ask the teacher.
She asked Ruth to hold the compass flat and wait for the needle to stop moving. The needle settled, and Ruth saw that she had turned too quickly. Together, the pair matched the map to the direction and found the wooden post.
A blue letter was attached to it. They wrote it on their sheet and looked for the next point. By the end, their letters made a word. Ruth was pleased, but she also knew she needed more practice before using a compass on a longer countryside walk.
