The Hour Her Father Could Not Buy

When Leila's father offered to pay for a cleaner, she accepted gratefully. She was raising a child alone and working long days. Soon, however, he began suggesting how she should use the hours she had saved. She could visit him more often, cook properly or take a useful course. His gift had quietly acquired a schedule of its own.

One evening, he found her watching a detective series beside a bowl of cereal. He said it was good she had so much spare time now. Leila heard criticism, though he insisted it was a joke. She felt obliged to list everything she had done that day. Afterwards, she realised she was submitting a report on hours he had never actually employed her to work.

She thanked him for the cleaner but said she would take over the payments from next month. He protested that she could not comfortably afford it. That was true. Instead of pretending otherwise, she explained why the help had begun to feel expensive in a different way. Her father looked genuinely surprised, then asked whether she thought he was keeping accounts.

Leila said she did not know what he intended; she only knew how she had started behaving. They agreed to continue the arrangement for three months without discussing her saved hours. It was an experiment, not a settled peace. The following Sunday, she visited him because she wanted his company, and left early because she wanted to finish the detective series as well.
