The App That Would Not Leave

When the residents' parking app announced its closure, Rita assumed that another company would take over. Then she read the notice carefully. The app would stop accepting payments in thirty days, and the town had no replacement ready. For years, physical ticket machines had been removed because digital parking was cheaper to manage.

Rita chaired the accessibility committee, but this was no longer a problem affecting only people without smartphones. Every driver would lose the ordinary way of paying. At an emergency meeting, the outgoing supplier offered a temporary extension at a much higher price. The town's contract contained detailed promises about service quality but almost nothing about how the service should end.

An angry councillor wanted to refuse the extension on principle. Rita asked what would happen to a visitor arriving the following Monday. After an uncomfortable silence, the council accepted one month at the higher rate while suspending penalties for payment failures. Staff opened a telephone payment line and placed clear signs in the car parks. None of it was elegant, and all of it required money.

For the next contract, Rita insisted on an exit plan that included usable records, advance notice and an alternative payment method. She also supported restoring a few ticket machines. Someone called this a step backwards. Rita replied that the town had moved quickly into a service it could not leave safely. Keeping another door open was not a rejection of technology. It was a way of preventing one company's departure from becoming everyone else's emergency.
