Three Versions of the Same Minute

The regional transport board published recordings of its meetings as part of a transparency promise. Communications assistant Daria edited out microphone tests and long breaks before uploading them. During one meeting, the chair made an inaccurate claim about a cancelled bus route. Ten minutes later, he corrected himself after receiving a note from the finance officer.

The chair asked Daria to remove the original mistake so that residents would not be confused. She could see the appeal: a short clip might circulate without the correction. However, deleting the exchange would also erase the questions from board members who had noticed the problem. The recording would become a cleaner account than the meeting itself had been.

Daria prepared three versions of that minute. One contained the original statement alone, one removed it, and one kept it with a visible note directing viewers to the correction. She showed them to the board secretary, who immediately understood why neither silence nor an isolated clip was sufficient. Together they proposed preserving the complete exchange and adding a written correction beside the recording.

The chair accepted, provided the correction was easy to find. A local reporter later used the inaccurate statement in a critical article, but also linked to the full discussion. Daria disliked the headline. Still, she resisted the temptation to treat that discomfort as proof that publication had been a mistake. The next recording included a clear editing note, listing every removed break. Residents could see not just the meeting, but the limited work done to prepare it.
