The Font in the Town Banner

Graphic designer Oskar volunteered to create a banner for the town's anniversary. He chose a beautiful font from a folder labelled Free Resources and sent the finished artwork to the council. A week before printing, the font's creator contacted him. The typeface was free for personal experiments, she explained, but commercial and institutional uses required a paid licence.

Oskar felt embarrassed, especially because the banner carried his studio's name. He had not designed the font, yet he had accepted praise for the elegant lettering without mentioning its source. The council had already paid for fabric, and changing the design would mean another round of approval. Its events officer suggested that a volunteer project surely counted as personal use.

Rather than argue about what seemed fair, Oskar read the licence carefully and contacted the creator. She offered the council a reduced community rate, but declined to make the font free. She earned her living from such payments. Oskar offered to cover the fee because the mistake had been his. The officer refused, saying the town should pay for the materials it officially used.

The banner went up on schedule. Its tiny production credit included the typeface and its creator, although the licence had not required that addition. Oskar renamed his resource folder and added copies of the relevant permissions. When another volunteer called this excessive, he pointed to the banner outside. His unpaid time had been a gift. That did not automatically turn somebody else's skilled work into one as well.
