The Portrait Outside Its Frame

Art student Mikel uploaded a self-portrait to his college's online exhibition. The form allowed the college to display and promote student work. Months later, he found a cropped version of his face on posters advertising an expensive summer course. The image no longer looked like an artwork; it looked as though he personally recommended the programme.

Mikel had attended the college on financial support and knew little about the summer course. He asked the marketing office to remove the posters. An employee pointed to the permission box he had selected and said the image was promoting the institution. Mikel replied that displaying a painting and turning its subject into a satisfied customer were not identical uses.

The college's exhibition coordinator arranged a meeting. She acknowledged that the form had been written for convenience rather than clarity. Yet hundreds of posters had already been printed, and replacing them would use money intended for student exhibitions. Mikel did not enjoy being asked to weigh his discomfort against opportunities for other students. He requested immediate removal online and a clear correction on the remaining printed posters.

The college accepted those terms and introduced separate choices for exhibition publicity and general advertising. Mikel declined the second option when he submitted his next painting. He continued to let the college show his work, even though a friend advised him to refuse everything. What he wanted was not disappearance. He wanted the frame around his permission to be as visible as the frame around the painting.
