A Museum Label With Two Authors

Museum researcher Celia spent six months translating the notes of a collector who had travelled through several coastal villages. Her exhibition label described a wooden mask as an object purchased fairly from its maker. Just before printing, a teacher from one village sent her a family letter suggesting that the mask had been taken as payment for an invented debt.

Celia could not establish the complete history before opening day. The collector's notebook and the family letter disagreed, and neither account could be checked against living witnesses. The director proposed keeping the existing label until the research was finished. Celia worried that a confident sentence would remain on the wall long after everyone had forgotten why it was provisional.

She invited the teacher to help write a different label. They agreed on the dates and the mask's materials, but not on a single account of its departure. Their draft presented both sources, identified who had written them and explained the disagreement. A designer complained that the text was too long. They removed an elegant paragraph about carving techniques rather than cut the uncertainty.

At the opening, a visitor accused the museum of avoiding a conclusion. Celia replied that displaying the evidence was not the same as refusing responsibility. The museum had also agreed to fund further research with the village. The teacher stood beside her, wearing a badge that named him as a contributing researcher. Neither was entirely happy with the label. Both were willing to sign it.
