The Camera Facing the Break Room

After several parcels disappeared, a delivery depot installed cameras above its loading doors. Supervisor Adrian supported the change until he saw the live display. One camera also captured the open doorway of the staff break room. Workers eating lunch were visible beside the parcels, even though the theft reports concerned deliveries outside working hours.

The security contractor said that moving the camera would leave a small blind spot. Adrian could understand the practical concern. He also knew that drivers sometimes sat in that room after difficult calls or long shifts. The depot had promised to protect packages, not provide managers with a continuous view of workers during their unpaid breaks.

At a staff meeting, opinions differed. A driver whose parcel had been stolen wanted every possible angle covered. Another asked whether the recordings might later be used to measure break lengths. Adrian had no written answer. Rather than offer a personal assurance that could disappear with his next promotion, he requested a clear policy from headquarters and a demonstration of a privacy mask.

The contractor covered the break-room doorway with a black area in the recorded image and adjusted the camera slightly. A narrow blind spot remained, so the depot added a lockable cage for valuable parcels. Headquarters prohibited routine monitoring of breaks in its policy. Adrian showed the revised recording to the staff, including the driver who remained doubtful. He could not promise there would be no further theft. He could show precisely what the camera now refused to see.
