The Sewing Lesson with Red Thread

In an adult sewing class, Marta kept choosing thread that matched her fabric exactly. She wanted her practice lines to disappear into the cloth so nobody would notice how uneven they were. Her finished samples looked tidy from a distance, but she could not see where she needed to improve.

For one lesson, the tutor gave her bright red thread and pale material. Every turn and gap became visible. Marta disliked the result and asked whether she could change colours. The tutor suggested keeping the red thread for ten minutes and comparing the first line with the last before deciding.

Marta slowed down and watched the space between the needle and the edge. At the end of ten minutes, the later lines were straighter. More importantly, she could see exactly where she had begun rushing. I was hiding the information I needed, she thought, while pretending that I was hiding only mistakes.

She used matching thread for the bag she made at the end of the course. For practice, though, she bought a large reel of red. When a new classmate admired her neat sample, Marta showed him the earlier piece too. It was not an object she wanted to display, but it made a useful explanation of how she had learned.
