The Community Budget and the Broken Kettle

Residents could choose one small project for the community room from a limited shared budget. The three proposals were new curtains, a bookcase and a projector. Owen supported the projector and prepared a cheerful presentation about film evenings. He was confident that most neighbours would share his enthusiasm.

Before the vote, an older resident asked why replacing the broken kettle was not an option. People had stopped serving tea at meetings, and the weekly conversation group had moved elsewhere. The kettle cost less than any of the proposed projects, but nobody had included ordinary maintenance in the discussion.

Owen initially felt that the question was distracting everyone from bigger ideas. Then he looked around the room and noticed several people nodding. A projector might attract visitors occasionally; a working kettle would support activities that already happened. He suggested checking whether the rules allowed a basic repair budget before choosing a larger project.

The committee confirmed that they could set aside money for necessary replacements and vote on the remaining amount. The residents chose the bookcase, not Owen's projector. He was disappointed, but he helped assemble it the following weekend. During the first meeting afterwards, someone handed him a cup of tea. He still wanted film evenings and began looking for a projector they could borrow.
