A Walking Map Tested in the Rain

The civic group wanted to create a simple walking map between the station, library and town hall. Clara enjoyed design and offered to draw it. Her first version used pale colours, small symbols and a beautiful thin line for each route. On her computer, it looked clear and professional.

Before printing hundreds of copies, the group asked volunteers to test one route using paper samples. It began to rain during the test. Clara's own copy became difficult to read, and a volunteer misunderstood the symbol for the library. Another person said that the text disappeared whenever the paper folded across a street name.

Clara felt protective of her design, especially after spending two evenings on it. Still, she could not argue with the wet sheet in her hands. Back at the meeting room, she made the lines darker, enlarged the labels and moved important information away from the main fold. The group tested the new version again.

The final map was plainer than the first, but nobody needed Clara beside them to explain it. A small batch went to the library desk, where staff collected comments for future changes. Clara kept her beautiful original file in a folder called early ideas. It was not a failure, but it was not the finished map either.
