A Ramp Hidden Behind the Bins

The neighbourhood access group visited public buildings to record practical obstacles and send clear reports to their managers. At a small community venue, the entrance had steps, but a ramp led to a side door. On the building's information sheet, this looked like a complete answer to access needs.

During the visit, Fran saw that large rubbish bins stood across the beginning of the ramp. A sign directed visitors to the side entrance, but it did not mention the bins. Fran took photographs with the manager's permission and asked which door was normally unlocked when activities were taking place inside.

The manager had not realised that the collection company left the bins there every Tuesday. He moved them and arranged a marked storage space away from the route. Fran also checked the opening procedure with a volunteer. A ramp was useful only if people could reach it and enter through the door at the end.

The group returned during a busy evening the following month. The route was clear, and the volunteer at reception knew how the side entrance worked. Fran's report recorded the improvement rather than leaving the original complaint unchanged. Other issues remained on the group's list, but this one now had a practical result they could verify in person.
