Mina took a photograph of her broken kitchen chair to a furniture shop. The assistant pointed towards a new model that cost less than a professional repair. Mina was ready to order it until she noticed how narrow its seat was.
Her old chair had a wide seat and a curved back. Her father had bought it when she first lived alone. She did not believe that every old object must be saved, but she enjoyed sitting in that particular chair after work.
At a workshop nearby, a carpenter examined the photograph. His price included collecting the chair, replacing the damaged piece and matching the paint. Mina asked whether she could bring it herself and paint it later. He wrote a second price beneath the first. It was still not the cheapest choice, but now she understood what she was paying for.
She carried the chair to him on her free afternoon. A week later, she painted it yellow instead of trying to hide the repair. The new piece remained slightly visible in bright light. When a friend asked why she had spent money on an old chair, Mina sat down comfortably before answering. 'Because this is the chair I wanted.
