Since his wife had begun working evening shifts, Marcus was responsible for getting their daughter ready for bed. Most tasks went well, but Lily's long hair defeated him. His attempts at braiding produced strange loose shapes that fell apart as soon as she moved her head.
One evening, Lily said her grandmother could do it better. Marcus felt a small sting of pride, then asked whether she would like him to call Gran. During a video call, his mother demonstrated with three lengths of wool. He watched carefully, but his fingers still moved in the wrong order.
Lily grew impatient and asked if they could stop. Marcus agreed. He did not want a bedtime routine to become a test that either of them had to pass. After she was asleep, he borrowed the wool and practised on the back of a chair while speaking to his mother.
She told him that she had learned from a neighbour because her own mother had always cut her hair short. He had assumed the skill simply belonged to her. The next evening, Marcus made a small but successful braid. Lily examined it in the mirror and nodded seriously. Then she asked him to teach her how to do it, so they could both help when Gran visited.
