At a small fabric shop, Lin used an old calculator to check customer totals. Several numbers on its buttons were almost invisible. Lin knew their positions, but her new colleague Dev pressed the wrong button twice while adding three prices.
Lin first suggested that he memorise the buttons as she had. Then she watched him turn the calculator towards the light. The problem was not his maths. The tool was simply difficult to use. She took a clear calculator from the back office for his shift.
During the quiet afternoon, they asked the manager what to do with the old one. She agreed that they needed another clear calculator at the counter. Until it arrived, they would share the office one and check that it returned to the counter after every use.
Dev finished the afternoon without another wrong button. Lin used the clearer calculator for the last sale and noticed how much easier it was. She put the old one aside with a note, rather than leaving the next worker to learn its hidden numbers.
