On her first morning at a large repair centre, Tessa asked where to find the parts cupboard. Her colleague said, 'Go past the old office and turn near the usual place.' Tessa smiled politely, but neither description meant anything to her.
She walked down the wrong corridor and found the staff changing room instead. When she returned, her colleague realised the problem. He knew the building so well that he used names a new person could not understand. He offered to show her the route.
Tessa took a blank sheet with her. As they walked, she drew the main corridor, the stairs and the doors. She wrote the actual room numbers beside the important places. The parts cupboard was next to room twelve, opposite the lift.
At lunchtime, another new worker asked her where to collect a uniform. Tessa showed him her map and added the changing room. By the end of the day, their supervisor wanted a copy to include with the information for future new staff.
