At an adult bicycle repair class, the teacher placed six old wheels on the tables. Finn was disappointed. He had brought his own bicycle and wanted to work on it immediately. The old wheels looked dirty, and none belonged to a complete bicycle.
The teacher explained that the first lesson was for practice. Students could make mistakes without damaging something they needed for work the next day. Finn took a wheel and tried to remove its tyre. He used too much force and dropped a tool.
The teacher showed him a slower method. Finn watched carefully, then tried again. His partner held the wheel while he moved the tool. After a few minutes, the tyre came off easily. They exchanged jobs so both could practise every step.
Only then did Finn bring his own bicycle to the table. The same task felt much easier now. At the end of class, he put the old wheel back neatly. Next week's students would need somewhere safe to make their first mistakes too.
