The Savings Jar for a Different Dream

For years, Teresa and Leon saved coins in a jar labelled Boat. They imagined weekends on the water once work became less demanding. By the time the jar was full and their savings substantial, Leon had discovered that he disliked being on boats for longer than an hour. He delayed mentioning this because the jar occupied such a visible place on the kitchen shelf.

Teresa finally suggested visiting a seller. Leon admitted the problem, expecting disappointment. Instead, she confessed that she had mainly wanted mornings without household chores, and the boat had seemed like a convincing way to escape them. Neither had deliberately misled the other. They had simply continued saving for an image after their actual wishes had moved in different directions.

They emptied the jar on the table and discussed alternatives. Leon wanted cycling trips; Teresa wanted a room where she could sew without clearing the table for dinner. At first, dividing the money felt like abandoning a shared future. Then they remembered that a boat would also have required choosing whose preferences mattered whenever the weather or their energy failed to cooperate.

They kept part of the savings for a short holiday and divided the rest. Teresa replaced the label with a blank piece of paper, intending to choose a new joint ambition later. For several months, the jar held only buttons. Leon added a foreign coin after their holiday, and neither removed it. The container could remain shared without deciding every destination in advance for both of them.
