The Queue He Chose to Stay In

After years of paying extra to avoid queues, Adrian found himself waiting at a small public office where no priority service existed. He had taken the afternoon off to correct an error in his late father's records. The appointment system had failed, and everyone held a paper number. Adrian's was forty-three; the display showed twenty-six.

He calculated the cost of his time, then grew irritated with the calculation. Nobody in the room was paying him to stand there. Beside him, a woman was knitting a sleeve. He asked whether she minded waiting. She said of course she did, but the jumper still needed finishing. Her answer contained neither the anger he expected nor the peaceful wisdom he briefly wanted.

When number thirty-one was called, Adrian received a work message asking whether he could join an urgent meeting online. He could leave and return another day, passing the unfinished task into a future afternoon. He typed that he was unavailable. The meeting went ahead without him, which produced a strange mixture of relief and disappointment as the numbers continued changing slowly.

At the desk, correcting the record took six minutes. Adrian walked outside with a stamped page that would matter to almost nobody else. He had gained no useful lesson about patience; the waiting had been unpleasant. Still, the task was finished, and the decision to stay had been his. On the way home, he called his sister to tell her their father's name was finally written correctly.
