The Door Held Open After Closing

On the last evening of the public swimming season, caretaker Elias waited beside the entrance while the final swimmers changed. He had accepted another job inland and would not return next spring. For seventeen summers, opening this door had given shape to his mornings. He had complained about the early hours often enough to feel embarrassed by his reluctance to leave now.

A regular swimmer asked him to keep the pool open for an extra ten minutes. Ordinarily, Elias refused such requests. Tonight, he was tempted to create a memorable final gesture, something people would mention when discussing his years there. Then he noticed the cleaner waiting with her equipment. His generous farewell would cost somebody else time she had not offered him.

He announced closing as usual and helped stack the chairs. The swimmer looked disappointed but thanked him for the season. There was no speech, no photograph and no sudden understanding of what seventeen summers had meant. Elias checked the cupboards, turned off the lights and walked through the empty changing rooms, finding one sock and a bottle of inexpensive shampoo.

Outside, he handed the keys to the new caretaker, who asked which lock sometimes stuck. Elias showed her, pleased that the final exchange concerned useful knowledge rather than a tribute. Then he held the door while the cleaner carried out her bucket. She wished him luck and hurried towards her bus. He let the door close and stood for a moment without being responsible for opening it again.
