The Bridge Outside the Saved Route

Whenever Anwar visited his childhood town, his navigation app directed him across the new bridge. He ignored it and drove through the centre, past the old cinema and the street where his family had lived. His wife tolerated the extra twenty minutes until their latest visit, when traffic stopped completely outside a building he no longer recognised at all.

The cinema had become a gym. Anwar said the town had lost its character, although he had not bought a cinema ticket there since leaving at nineteen. His wife asked whose character he meant. He disliked the question. The streets were real, and the changes were real, yet his complaint depended on expecting a place to remain available for occasional inspections.

They parked and walked to the river. Beside the new bridge, two teenagers were eating chips and arguing about music. Anwar suddenly remembered doing exactly that near the old crossing, which his father had considered an ugly replacement for something earlier. He had never felt responsible for preserving his father's preferred view while enjoying the space with his own friends.

On the return drive, Anwar followed the app. The new bridge offered a clear view of the river bend he remembered. He slowed slightly, then continued before the driver behind him became impatient. He could visit the old street again on another day. This evening, he wanted to reach his sister's house while she was still awake, rather than arrive carrying complaints about buildings she passed every morning.
