Forty Minutes Between Two Buses

Every afternoon, Joel had forty minutes between finishing work and catching the bus that connected with his village service. He spent them in a shopping centre, buying snacks he did not want. When his employer offered an earlier finish for less pay, he calculated that he would lose money but recover several hours of waiting each week.

His partner thought the choice was obvious. Joel disagreed, although he could not decide which side he was defending. They needed the money, but he also resented how those forty minutes belonged to neither work nor home. He tried reading on a public bench. Security staff moved him because they were cleaning, and his book suddenly felt like an inadequate solution.

One Tuesday, he discovered a small repair stall that needed help closing at five. The owner offered him paid work during the gap. Joel was tempted: he could turn wasted time into income. Then he pictured every available minute becoming useful to someone else. He asked whether he could help on Tuesdays only. The owner accepted, surprised by such a precise limit.

Joel kept his original hours at work. On Tuesdays, he folded the stall's shutters; on other days, he walked without making a purchase. This did not recover the lost evenings or improve the bus timetable. Still, the gap stopped being one identical block of frustration. Some afternoons he enjoyed it. Others remained cold, dull and stubbornly longer than forty minutes felt entitled to be.
