The Empty Line After Occupation

The evening drawing class began with a form. Name, address, occupation. Ruth wrote architect, crossed it out and left the line empty. She had stopped practising three years earlier to care for her husband, who was now well enough to manage alone. Calling herself an architect seemed dishonest; writing carer felt like extending a job she was trying to leave.

The tutor collected the forms without comment and placed a kettle on the table for them to draw. Ruth measured its angles carefully. Beside her, a bus driver produced a crooked kettle with an enormous handle. He looked pleased with it. Ruth envied his freedom to make a bad drawing without apparently feeling that his entire professional history was being examined.

When the tutor approached, Ruth apologised for the stiffness of her work. He asked whether the kettle looked stiff. She said it did not. He suggested drawing it again without measuring. The second attempt was worse, but it contained something she had actually noticed: the handle leaned towards the window as though it were listening to the traffic outside.

During the break, the bus driver asked what she did. Ruth said she used to design buildings and was deciding what came next. He nodded and complained about the coffee. There was no demand for a more complete answer. At the end, she took both drawings home. Her husband preferred the first, which irritated her. She pinned the second above her desk anyway.
