The Donation With a Brass Plate

When a music club needed a new piano, Evelyn offered to pay for it. She said she wanted nothing in return, then asked whether a small brass plate could mention her late husband. The committee agreed. Choosing the instrument took weeks, during which Evelyn began attending meetings and offering opinions about concerts she had never previously wanted to organise.

A young pianist suggested placing the piano in the rehearsal room rather than on the main stage. Evelyn objected: fewer people would see the plate there. The silence that followed was brief but unmistakable. She realised she had just admitted that the gift's visibility mattered to her, although she had presented the donation as an entirely practical act of support.

At home, she looked through her husband's concert programmes. He had loved rehearsals because mistakes made musicians seem human. She had forgotten this while imagining his name beneath stage lights. The next day, she called the committee and accepted the rehearsal room. However, she also asked for an annual afternoon when members could play music he had enjoyed together.

The committee could not promise an annual event, but offered one afternoon that autumn. Evelyn agreed, disappointed by the limit and grateful for its honesty. When the piano arrived, the plate was smaller than she had imagined. She ran her hand over it, then moved aside so someone could open the keyboard. The first tune was not one her husband would have chosen.
