Film translator Dorian spent weeks producing subtitles for an independent documentary. The director praised his work, particularly a difficult joke that depended on a local expression. At the premiere, Dorian waited for his name in the credits. It did not appear. The streaming platform listed him as a technical supplier in a private production record instead.

When he complained, the director said subtitles were a service, like transferring files or checking sound levels. Dorian did not dismiss those jobs, but he wanted the creative choices in translation acknowledged. The film's meaning had crossed into another language through hundreds of decisions that were not automatic. He showed the director three possible versions of the joke, each producing a different impression of the speaker.

The director admitted that she preferred Dorian's version but worried about reopening the final film file. The platform charged for replacing it, and the production budget was exhausted. Dorian suggested adding a visible translation credit to the film's information page immediately, then including it in the film itself when the next corrected edition was uploaded. He wanted recognition, not an expensive technical crisis.

The credit appeared online that afternoon. At a later screening, the director introduced Dorian as the person who had helped the film speak to a new audience. He appreciated the words, although he still checked the updated final credits afterward. Gratitude spoken in a room was welcome; a durable record was better. His next contract named both forms of credit before he translated the first line, leaving more time for the difficult jokes.
