The Log File Nobody Wanted Saved

IT officer Soren discovered that a council employee had opened a restricted planning folder without a work-related reason. The access appeared in a system log. When Soren reported it, the department head asked him to delete the log after correcting the permissions. Keeping evidence of an isolated mistake, she argued, would unfairly damage the employee's career.

Soren did not know why the employee had opened the folder. The event might have been accidental, curious or deliberate. The log alone could not answer that question. Yet deleting it would remove the basis for checking the explanation. He was equally uneasy about circulating it widely, because suspicion could travel much faster than any eventual finding.

He consulted the council's records officer and preserved the relevant entry in a restricted incident file. The employee was invited to explain what had happened through the normal review process. She showed that a link in an internal message had led her into the folder, which she had closed after recognising the contents. Further checks supported that account and revealed a badly configured access group.

The review recommended fixing the group rather than disciplining the employee. Soren recorded the conclusion beside the original event. The department head admitted that keeping the evidence had protected the employee as well as the council. Soren resisted turning this into a victory speech. A log could support accountability only when somebody also documented its limits, checked the surrounding facts and prevented an unexplained entry from becoming a permanent shadow over a person's name.
