The Badge That Followed the Visitor

A science centre gave visitors smart badges that activated exhibits automatically. Designer Anton loved watching children approach a display and see it respond without pressing a button. During testing, he discovered that badges remained active after visitors left. The same code could be recognised during later visits, even when nobody had created a personal account.

The marketing team wanted to use this feature to measure loyalty. Anton pointed out that families had been told the badge helped operate exhibits, not that it would connect their visits over time. A colleague replied that no names were involved. Anton imagined a visitor lending the badge to someone else and wondered how reliable the supposed loyalty figures would be anyway.

He suggested resetting badges at the exit. Operations staff objected that children often kept them as souvenirs, and collecting every badge would create a queue. Then a cleaner proposed printing a return address on the back so unwanted badges could be posted later. That helped with waste but did not solve the tracking problem. Anton separated the two issues and asked the supplier for codes that expired automatically each evening.

The supplier implemented daily expiry. Reusable badges could receive a new code on arrival, while souvenir badges became ordinary pieces of plastic. Marketing lost its measure of returning visitors and adopted an optional survey instead. Anton kept a dead badge on his desk. It reminded him that an object could continue to belong to someone after its digital connection had ended, and that sometimes the most respectful feature was the ability to stop recognising its owner.
