The Book That Vanished on Tuesday

A reading group borrowed the same digital novel through the county library. On Tuesday morning, every copy disappeared from their devices. Their loan period had not ended. Librarian Elsa discovered that a disagreement between the publisher and the platform had removed the title from the service, including copies already being read by library members.

The supplier offered substitute books, but the group was due to meet that evening. Elsa could not replace three weeks of shared reading with another title. A participant who used enlarged text had chosen the group specifically because the digital edition suited him. Telling everyone to buy a printed copy would solve neither the financial problem nor the access problem.

Elsa obtained two print copies from nearby branches and arranged for the discussion to focus on the chapters everyone remembered. The meeting was lively, partly because people disagreed over details they could no longer check. Someone joked that the book had become more mysterious after disappearing. Elsa laughed, then asked permission to include their experience in a report to the library board.

At the next contract review, the board requested protection for active loans when titles were withdrawn. One platform would not offer it; another charged more. The library chose a smaller catalogue with clearer continuity terms. Several readers criticised the reduced selection, and Elsa understood their disappointment. The vanished novel eventually returned, but she did not treat its return as proof that nothing important had happened. Access that depended on a dispute elsewhere was a different promise from a book already sitting on a shelf.
