Textile entrepreneur Ada found a striking geometric pattern in her grandmother's embroidery book. She adapted it for a line of bags and prepared to register the design under her own name. Before submitting the application, she visited the village where her grandmother had grown up, hoping to photograph the bags against a traditional house.
At the community workshop, three women recognised the pattern immediately. One showed Ada a tablecloth with the same central shape, made decades before her grandmother's notebook. The pattern had passed between households, changing slightly with each maker. Ada's colour choices were original, but her claim to the whole design suddenly seemed much larger than her actual contribution.
Her business partner argued that they needed protection against cheap copies. Ada agreed that their investment mattered, yet she could not present a shared tradition as an invention simply because she had put it on a modern product. She consulted a design adviser about protecting the new layout without claiming exclusive ownership of the traditional elements. She also commissioned the workshop to develop a clearly credited collection.
The arrangement cost more than using a distant factory, and the first production run was smaller than planned. At the launch, Ada described where the central pattern came from and what her team had changed. Her grandmother examined a bag and immediately pointed out a crooked seam. Ada welcomed the criticism. Being part of a tradition, she was discovering, did not excuse weak workmanship any more than it entitled her to sign her name across everyone else's contribution.
