A month of changing work shifts kept Leon away from his evening book discussion course. When his schedule settled, he had missed three meetings and most of the novel. He opened the group messages several times without replying. Returning seemed harder than quietly leaving, although he had enjoyed the course.
Eventually, he wrote to the tutor and explained the situation. She did not tell him to read everything in one weekend. Instead, she sent the pages needed for the next discussion and a brief outline of earlier events. Leon could catch up with the rest later if he chose.
At his first meeting back, someone referred to a scene he had not read. Leon was tempted to nod as if he understood. Instead, he said that he had missed that part and asked a question about the assigned pages. The discussion moved on without the embarrassment he had expected.
After class, another student admitted that she was behind too. They arranged to discuss one earlier section each week before the lesson. Leon never completed every optional exercise, but he finished the novel by the final meeting. His return had begun with a smaller task than repairing a whole month: reading enough to take part on one Tuesday evening.
