The Friend Who Came Without Flowers

When her elderly cat died, Helena expected to feel sad, but she did not expect the flat to seem so quiet. She still paused before closing doors and looked down before moving her chair. Some friends tried to comfort her by saying she could get another cat soon.

Her friend Esther asked whether she could visit on Wednesday. She arrived without flowers, advice or pictures of animals needing homes. Instead, she brought lunch and asked Helena whether she wanted the cat's bowl moved from beside the fridge. Helena said she was not ready for that yet.

They ate at the kitchen table. Helena talked about the cat's habit of stealing warm places, including the chair Esther was sitting on. Esther listened and asked to see a favourite photograph. Helena chose one in which only a tail was visible behind a curtain. It made them both laugh.

Before leaving, Esther offered to help sort the cat's things whenever Helena wanted, not before. The bowl stayed beside the fridge that week. Later, Helena moved it into a cupboard herself and sent Esther a short message. Esther replied by asking if she would like another Wednesday lunch. There was no timetable for feeling better and no suggestion that a different cat would replace this one. There was simply someone willing to return to the quiet flat.
