My Mother’s Secret Dancing Shoes

While searching for a suitcase, Penny found silver dancing shoes in her mother's wardrobe. They were wrapped carefully in a cloth bag. Penny had never seen her mother dance except at weddings, where she usually stayed near the chairs and claimed that her feet were tired.

At dinner, Penny asked about the shoes. Her mother explained that she had taken dancing lessons for three years before Penny was born. She had stopped when life became busy, but she still remembered some steps. Penny immediately suggested joining a class together and began searching on her phone.

Her mother asked her to slow down. She had enjoyed sharing the memory, but that did not mean she wanted it turned into a new project. Penny put the phone away, feeling slightly embarrassed. She asked instead what kind of music they had used in the lessons.

Her mother found an old recording and played it in the kitchen. For a few minutes, she demonstrated a simple turn while Penny tried to follow. They bumped into a chair and laughed. The shoes stayed in their bag because the kitchen floor was wet. Nobody booked a class.
