Every year, Liam and his sister sent their father a birthday card in August. One February morning, Liam found an old card in a drawer. It had been written by his father to his own father, who had died before Liam was born. The message was surprisingly playful.
Liam had always known his father as a serious man who checked train times twice and disliked arriving late. In the card, he had drawn an enormous cake falling onto a tiny man. The message teased Liam's grandfather about getting older and losing at chess every Sunday.
Liam photographed the card and sent it to his father. Within minutes, the phone rang. His father wanted to know where it had been found, then began describing the Sunday chess games. Apparently, Liam's grandfather had secretly allowed him to win until he was nearly an adult.
After the call, Liam bought a blank card. He drew a very bad chessboard and wrote that August was too far away for another family joke. His father received it three days later and placed it beside the telephone. When Liam visited the following weekend, a chess set waited on the table. His father warned him that no one would be allowed to win. Liam was not entirely sure he believed him.
