At a café, one member of the group joked about Ravi's accent. Several people laughed. Tom did not laugh, but he did not say anything either. He stared at his cup until the conversation changed. Ravi left early, saying that he had things to do.
On his way home, Tom sent a message explaining that he had thought the joke was unfair. Ravi replied that he wished Tom had said that in the café. Tom began typing an excuse about not wanting an argument. Then he stopped. The explanation might be true, but it would not change what Ravi had experienced.
The following day, Tom apologised without asking Ravi to reassure him. He also spoke privately to the person who had made the joke and said it should not happen again. He did not report this conversation to Ravi as if he deserved a reward for having it.
Their next meeting felt awkward at first. Tom accepted that Ravi might need time before trusting him in the same way. A few weeks later, another unkind comment began at the table. Tom interrupted calmly and asked the speaker to stop. Ravi continued drinking his coffee. There was no dramatic thank you, and Tom understood that none was needed. This was simply something he should have done earlier.
