The first birthday after her mother's death, Grace told everyone she did not want a party. Her friends understood, but her brother arrived that morning with a large cake. Seeing the bright candles, Grace felt angry. She had clearly asked for an ordinary day, without celebration.
Her brother left the cake on the kitchen table and apologised. He explained that their mother had ordered the same kind every year. Buying it had seemed like a way to keep her close. Grace realised that they were both missing the same person but wanted different things.
They did not force an agreement immediately. Grace went for a short walk alone while her brother made coffee. When she returned, she asked whether they could eat the cake without candles or singing. Her brother said yes, and put the unused candles into a drawer for another time.
Over coffee, they talked about birthdays that had gone wrong: wet picnics, a missing bus and a cake the dog had tasted first. Grace cried once and laughed several times. In the afternoon, her brother took half the cake home. She had not enjoyed a normal birthday, and she did not pretend otherwise. But they had found a way to share part of the day without asking each other to feel the same.
