While helping her father organise his desk, Clara found a drawer filled with letters. Each envelope carried her name, but none had a stamp. She asked whether they were old birthday cards. Her father shook his head and seemed suddenly interested in the papers on the floor.
During the years when they hardly spoke, he explained, he had sometimes written what he could not say aloud. He had never posted the letters because he feared making things worse. Clara wanted to open them immediately, yet she could see that he was not ready to hand them over.
She asked whether there was one he would like her to read. After a long pause, he selected an envelope from the middle. It contained a description of a winter walk and a simple sentence saying he wished she had been there. There were no arguments or explanations inside.
Clara read it twice and thanked him. She did not ask for the others. Later, they walked to the river together, talking mostly about the changing weather and a dog chasing leaves. Before they returned, her father asked if he could send her a letter now. Clara gave him her new address, although she knew that he already had it. This time, the envelope would need a stamp.
