A Quiet Seat at Rehearsal

The neighbourhood singing group always went for drinks after Thursday rehearsals. Tessa enjoyed singing with them, but she usually left as soon as the music stopped. The busy café tired her, and ordering drinks was difficult on her small budget. After a month, invitations stopped coming.

Tessa felt hurt, although she understood why people had given up asking. One Thursday, she heard two singers planning a birthday celebration. She wanted to join them but could not face another expensive, noisy evening. On the way out, she told the group leader that she missed talking to everyone.

The leader had assumed Tessa preferred to keep to herself. Together, they considered a different opportunity. The following week, rehearsal ended ten minutes early. They put a kettle on in the small kitchen and arranged chairs in a loose circle. People could stay briefly without buying anything.

Several singers stayed, including two who had never visited the café. Tessa discovered that one lived on her street and another shared her interest in old films. The usual café group still went out afterwards. Nothing had been cancelled or forbidden. There was simply another place to join the conversation. Tessa left with her music folder under her arm and someone beside her discussing the walk home.
