Iris had one voice message from her late aunt saved on her phone. It was not a great speech. Her aunt simply asked whether Iris wanted apples and complained that the shopping bag had broken. Iris listened whenever she missed the ordinary sound of her voice.
When the phone began switching itself off, Iris panicked. She took it to her cousin Sam and asked him to save the message somewhere else. Sam transferred it to her computer and made another copy. Then he suggested sharing it with the whole family so everyone could remember their aunt.
Iris hesitated. The message felt private, although there was nothing secret in it. She worried that saying no would seem selfish. Sam noticed her silence and explained that he had only made a suggestion. Saving the message did not mean she had agreed to share it with anybody.
A few weeks later, Iris invited Sam to listen with her. They laughed at the angry sentence about the broken bag, then sat quietly for a while. She decided to keep the recording private for now. Instead, she wrote down the story about the apples for the family. It was a way to share a memory without giving away the particular piece she still needed for herself.
