While clearing a kitchen drawer, Eva found a recipe written in her grandmother's careful handwriting. Below it, someone had added a warning in large letters: never trust the cooking time. Eva recognised her father's writing and carried the paper into the sitting room.
Her grandmother had died the previous winter. Since then, her father had avoided talking about the meals they used to share. Eva wondered whether she should put the recipe away. Instead, she asked a simple question about the warning. Her father smiled before he could stop himself.
The first time he had made those biscuits, he explained, they had become so hard that the dog refused one. His mother had blamed the oven to save his feelings. Later, she admitted that she never used a clock while baking. She simply watched the colour change.
That afternoon, Eva and her father made a small batch together. They checked the oven every few minutes and disagreed pleasantly about the right shade of brown. When the biscuits cooled, Eva added a third note: best made with someone who remembers the story. Her father read it, then asked for a pen. He wanted to correct the part about the dog, which had actually eaten two.
