The Language Added to Every Shift

Because Esma spoke two languages, colleagues often asked her to help customers who struggled with the shop's usual language. She was happy to explain a product occasionally. Over time, however, she began translating long complaints, delivery arrangements and messages outside her shifts.

Her ordinary tasks did not disappear while she translated. She stayed late to finish stock checks and wondered why a useful skill had made her working day less manageable. When the manager praised her helpfulness, she thanked him and asked for a proper conversation about the extra duties.

Esma brought examples of the time involved. She said she could continue if translation became a defined part of her role, with suitable time and a discussion of pay. The manager explained that he needed approval for any change. He suggested continuing as before until the next budget review.

Esma agreed to answer simple questions during her shift, but not to translate long documents or messages at home. The manager was not delighted. They set a meeting date, and the larger question remained open.

That evening, a work message appeared while Esma was eating. She left it for the next shift. The boundary felt uncomfortable rather than victorious. Nevertheless, for the first time in weeks, she finished dinner while it was still warm.
