The Week Without Small Purchases

Eli challenged himself to avoid every unnecessary purchase for a week. He wanted to understand where his money went, and the idea sounded simple. On Monday, he walked past the cafe near work and felt pleased with his determination.

By Wednesday, the challenge had become a competition against himself. He refused a cheap bus ticket and walked home in heavy rain. On Thursday, he avoided buying lunch even though he had forgotten his packed food. Being hungry made him impatient during an afternoon meeting.

That evening, his flatmate asked whether the experiment was teaching him anything useful. Eli began listing the money he had not spent, then stopped. He knew the total, but he had learned little about which purchases mattered. He had treated comfort, convenience and habit as if they were exactly the same thing.

For the remaining days, he wrote a reason beside each purchase instead of banning it. Friday's bus ticket meant arriving home dry. Saturday's magazine was mostly boredom. The list was less impressive than a perfect week of spending nothing, but more honest. On Sunday, he bought coffee with a friend and stayed for an hour. He recorded the cost afterwards, along with a reason that did not sound like a failure: time together.
