The Apron on the Exhibition Wall

The town library planned an exhibition about local work. It asked residents to lend objects that represented their professions. People offered old cameras, drafting tools and carefully polished instruments. Oksana, who worked in a fish shop, thought she had nothing suitable.

Her daughter suggested the blue apron hanging behind their kitchen door. Oksana laughed because its pocket had been repaired twice. She imagined it beside the impressive objects and worried that visitors would see only stains. However, the librarian asked her to bring it and explain the repairs.

One patch covered a tear from a broken crate. The other strengthened the pocket where she carried a small notebook of orders. As she spoke, Oksana described regular customers, early deliveries and the concentration required to prepare each order correctly. The librarian wrote a short label using her own words.

At the opening, Oksana found a boy reading the label closely. He asked why she wrote orders instead of remembering them. She explained that remembering a face was different from remembering several exact requests on a busy morning. He nodded and returned to the display. Oksana stayed beside the apron for a while, answering practical questions. She had expected to defend her work. Instead, she was simply explaining it to people who wanted to know.
