A Second Try at the Depot

For years, Nadia cleaned buses at the city depot and imagined driving one. She enjoyed watching drivers prepare their routes. When a training opportunity appeared, she applied quietly, telling only her sister. She did not want encouragement to become another kind of pressure.

The first practical assessment went badly. Nadia hesitated at a difficult turn and forgot part of the checking routine. The instructor explained what she needed to improve. Nadia listened, but on the journey home she could hear only the word 'failed' repeating in her mind.

She almost withdrew from the course. Instead, she asked the instructor whether she could practise the checking routine on a parked vehicle before her next lesson. He arranged supervised practice. Nadia used a written sequence until the order became familiar. The difficult turn still worried her, so she asked to work on it again too.

On the second assessment, she passed. There was no immediate driving job available, and she returned to her cleaning shift that evening. Her sister wanted to celebrate with everyone, but Nadia preferred a small meal together. She placed the result letter inside a kitchen drawer. It was not a new identity yet. It was a completed step, and for that evening she was willing to let one step be enough.
