After moving into his flat, Owen decided that a proper adult should own a serious toolbox. He ordered a large red one with several empty sections. Filling it became a project. He watched videos about tools for repairs his home did not actually need.
One Saturday, he entered a hardware shop to buy an expensive electric saw. The assistant asked what he planned to cut. Owen described a shelf that he might build one day. Saying it aloud made the project sound much less certain than it had sounded in his head.
He left without the saw and visited the neighbourhood tool library instead. There, he could borrow equipment after a short introduction. The volunteer showed him a small drill and asked him to practise on spare wood. Owen discovered that even making a straight hole required more attention than choosing a machine online.
Over the next month, he borrowed tools for two real repairs. The red toolbox remained mostly empty, holding a tape measure, basic hand tools and some screws. It no longer embarrassed him. When his brother admired the box and asked what was inside, Owen opened it. 'Only things I can explain,' he said, moving a loose screw away from the lid.
