Rosa's bicycle developed a loud click on the way to her morning shift. She used it again for an evening job across town, so leaving it at a workshop for several days would be difficult. A shop window displayed a shiny replacement with a basket.
She asked the mechanic to examine her old bicycle before she considered buying anything. He found a worn part and offered a repair appointment for Thursday. Rosa explained her two shifts. He could not promise an earlier repair, but he had a basic bicycle that customers could borrow.
The borrowed bicycle was bright orange and far too cheerful for Rosa's mood. Its basket rattled, and a sticker on the back said 'Still Going'. By Wednesday, she was laughing whenever she saw it. At the evening job, another cleaner recognised the sticker. She had borrowed the same bicycle the previous winter.
Rosa collected her repaired bicycle on Thursday and checked the quiet wheels outside the shop. She was pleased to have it back, although she missed the ridiculous colour. Before leaving, she asked the mechanic where he had bought the sticker. Her bicycle did not need a new frame or a basket. It could, however, use a small declaration of confidence.
