Fern hated asking for things in person. When she imagined a meeting with the owner, every useful sentence turned into an apology. Her friend suggested writing down the new duties first, without trying to sound brave or impressive. Fern made a clear list and requested a short meeting.
She brought the list, a few recent schedules and a question about how the additional responsibility affected her pay. The owner did not agree immediately. He asked for time to examine the budget and promised an answer by Tuesday. Fern wrote the date down rather than filling the silence with a nervous offer to forget the whole thing.
On Tuesday, he offered a higher rate for her new role, starting the following month. Fern asked him to confirm it in writing. Afterwards, she stood by the mixer with flour on her sleeve. There had been no powerful speech, and she had still felt nervous. Apparently, she did not need to become a different person to ask a clear question.
